Our History

When the girls of 1923 arrived in Canton to enter the Home Economics course, the need of a new sorority was desperately felt. In October of 1923, ten women banded themselves together and formed Alpha Chi Omicron. For their colors they chose silver gray and blue, and decided that their flower would be the chrysanthemum. They applied to the faculty for recognition and after due consideration, were given approval.

In October, they rushed others at a Theatre Party. The affair was very successful in the attempt to draw them nearer to their classmates. Another rush was held in December at which time the guests were entertained with games and contests, followed by refreshments.

The first AXO Christmas party was held in December of 1923 at the first Chapter House. After Santa had paid his visit and distributed gifts to the girls, everyone declared that the year -1923- had treated them royally and that the year 1924 would be met with high hopes and noble ambitions.

On Friday, February 8th 1924, and Initiatory Banquet was held at the Miner Inn. A five course dinner was served and enjoyed with songs and jokes. Katherine Ingham was toastmistress and kept the banqueters in high spirits with her witticisms.

Things have certainly changed within AXO, our colors and sorority flower are different, but one thing remains the same. We are a band of women, a band of sisters that strive to promote the bonds of friendship and sisterhood.

Lifelong Benefits

Every member is selected to life membership. This choice of membership does not relate simply to one term at SUNY Canton or one campus or community, for every member enjoys a member's rights, privileges and responsibilities wherever she may live, study, work or travel. As a member, you have the opportunity to be a part of a sisterhood that has blossomed from Ten Founders to over 2,000 members with sisters in almost every state in the country.

Meet a Few AXO Alumni

Every once in a while we like to share the stories of AXO Alumni, and we always learn something new. Alumni are the greatest part of our organization for without them we wouldn't be here. Take a moment to meet a few of our alumni and if you are so inclined, please share your story with the rest of us. For now, send an e-mail to Heather and in the near future we will have a quick and easy web form for you to fill out.

Zeta Alpha Phi

Zeta Alpha Phi is the "brother" fraternity to Alpha Chi Omicron. Founded in 1914 Zeta Alpha Phi is one of the longest standing fraternities in the area. Their ability to survive some of the most difficult times for the Greek community is truly a sign of the bond and strength that they possess. Visit our brother's web site here.
