We are very pleased that you are interested in our organization. We expect high standards from both our members and those interested in becoming members. If you are committed to academic excellence, community service and sisterhood, then please join us at our next rush to get to know us a little better, and so we may get to know you.

Rush Calendar

The Fall 2007 Rush Calendar is now available for potential members to view.

[Open the Calendar]

  • Rushing: 10/1 to 10/18

  • Pledging: 10/23 to 11/9

Rush Tips

  • Give each sorority a fair chance. Although you may have friends in a particular sorority, try to keep an open mind. You may discover that another sorority is right for you.

  • Meet as many women in each sorority as possible. This will give you a broader perspective on the sororities and the opportunity to make new friends.

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions. Being able to distinguish aspects about each sorority will help you with your final decision.

  • Organize your daily schedule. Be sure to plan enough time for studies, sleep, meals and of course, Rushing itself!

  • Most importantly -- Always be yourself! Sororities are interested in who YOU are.  Remember, these relationships will continue long after Rushing, so make sure that you are comfortable with the sorority you choose and above all, have FUN!

Rush Guidelines

Alpha Chi Omicron, along with SUNY Canton, has standards of behavior for rush that are in effect for the entire year. Violation of Rush conduct standards can result in a penalty issued from the AXO governing body, or from SUNY Canton's governing body against an individual member or an entire sorority. Any questions or complaints should be addressed to the President of Alpha Chi Omicron within three weeks of the incident so that the situation can be dealt with immediately.

Pledging/Orientation

A bid is an invitation to join a sorority. After the Rushing process, the members of Alpha Chi Omicron will extend to you, a written invitation to join the Sorority. You may either accept an invitation or decline it. You may accept only one invitation to pledge a Sorority.

Alpha Chi Omicron is pleased that you are considering participating in Rush this year. Whether or not you choose to accept a bid at the end of the Rush process, AXO feels that it is important for you to become familiar with the various policies regarding the orientation process. Because AXO wants you to fully understand the orientation process, you will be required to read and sign a form similar to this before you can participate in the orientation process. (This form will be available for you to sign from your Pledge Mistress.) The Pledge Mistress is the member of a sorority who will lead you through the orientation process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is new member orientation?
After accepting a bid, each new member will participate in a new member orientation program that has been carefully designed by the older active women and alumnae to help familiarize their new orientation class with history, traditions and other members of the sorority.

Are there any orientation requirements?
Yes. You must have a minimum GPA of 2.25, and you must also be in good standing with SUNY Canton. Specifically, you must not be on academic or social probation.

When will a new member become a full member of the sorority?
As soon as a woman accepts a bid from a sorority, she becomes a pledge of that sorority, granting her some rights and privileges that belong to members. However, she will not participate in the formal initiation ceremony until after the orientation period has ended.

How long will the orientation process last and what should a new member expect as far as time commitments?
Generally, orientation lasts for three weeks following bid day. However, it may be possible that each sorority has different orientation calendars and dates for formal initiations. To better understand the time commitment involved in the orientation process, a rushee should speak to the Pledge Mistress of that sorority. It may also be helpful to talk to current sorority members who have already completed the process.

Please remember that rush activities are intended to be fun, as well as informative. Because AXO wants these activities to be as rewarding as possible, we have compiled this orientation information in effort to educate rushees and potential new members about the high standards they should expect from sororities in rush and new member orientation programs.

Still have questions? Contact an AXO at anytime using the information on our Contact page, or if you see a member, feel free to approach her with any questions or concerns you may have.
